Crystal Bowersox deserves to win American Idol. She is heads and tails the most well-rounded, talented, charismatic and likable artist on the tired show. She’s been the judges' favorite, the public’s favorite, the mentors’ favorite, and REVIEWnivese’s favorite since the season began.
But now it seems like the judges are sabotaging her once-certain win. They are putting Mamasox in jeopardy to either 1) prevent her from being the presumptive winner and then losing because of that presumption a la Adam Lambert, or 2) their skewed sights are set on crowning Lee DeWyze the next David Cook Idol.
Listen, this isn’t opinion, this is fact: the Sinatra performance by Bowersox was heads and tails more sophisticated, nuanced and just downright better sung than any other contestants'. Watch it again, and don’t get caught in the judges’ inane hype of "Big Mike" and DeWyze.
Every contestant had problems with Sinatra week. Ol’ Blue Eyes (no, not Ellen Degeneres) has very big shoes to fill—He was the master of phrasing, as Kara insightfully mentioned. He wasn’t a one-dimensional singer. The nuances Bowersox brought to “Summer Wind,” were layered, thoughtful and creative. The more wistful “Summer Wind” might not have been a Big Song the way DeWyze’s choice, “That’s Life “ was, but Crystal sang it with such finesse, grace and skill, it was really one of the musical highlights, albeit low-key, of the evening.
Judges, don’t ruin a good thing here. Crystal Bowersox will deservedly win this year’s title if you don’t muck it up. That girl can sing, and is one of the best vocalists ever on the show. After being surrounded by the worst group of contestants in the series’ history, she’s owed something.
If that voice doesn't win, it will really be a shame.
