Crystal Bowersox sings "Summer Wind" on the American Idol Top 5 Show

Crystal Bowersox sings “Summer Wind” on the American Idol Season 9 show. Harry Connick Jr mentors the Top 5 on the music of Frank Sinatra.

Frank's daughters Tina and Nancy, known for her 1966 signature hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", were in the audience for this very special tribute. They presented judge Simon Cowell, who has called Sinatra his all-time favorite singer, with Frank Sinatra's personal monogrammed hanky. "What I liked about Sinatra was he was the king of cool," Cowell stated later in the show.

Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor.

Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra became a successful solo artist in the early to mid-1940s, being the idol of the "bobby soxers." His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1954 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He signed with Capitol Records and released several critically lauded albums (such as "In the Wee Small Hours", "Songs for Swingin' Lovers", "Come Fly with Me", "Only the Lonely" and "Nice 'n' Easy"). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records (finding success with albums such as "Ring-A-Ding-Ding", "Sinatra at the Sands" and "Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim"), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and presidents, including President John F. Kennedy. Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective "September of My Years", starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way".

Sinatra attempted to weather the changing tastes in popular music, but with sales of his music dwindling, and after appearing in several poorly received films, he retired in 1971. Coming out of retirement in 1973, he recorded several albums; scored a Top 40 hit with "(Theme From) New York, New York" in 1980; and toured both within the United States and internationally until a few years before his death in 1998.

Sinatra also forged a career as an actor, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity, and he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Man with the Golden Arm. He also starred in such musicals as High Society, Pal Joey, Guys and Dolls and On the Town. Sinatra was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. Sinatra was also the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

  1. I just washed my hands and I can't seem to do anything with my fingers, they just want to type, type and type somemore, about Crystal that is!! You made it through another week, as I knew you would.
What I see very clearly about you now, is you are not pandering to or for the people on the panel, just don't like the word judge, makes it sound as if they have some power over you and at this point it is very clear they don't. You stand for what you know of yourself and to hell with them!! I don't believe they get you at all, quick to praise when you get out and belt out a huge song, but then they don't like the soft side of you, which to me is the most endearing. Don't get me wrong, I love everything you do, but I especially loved the "Midnight Train to Georgia", and "Summerwind", but my heart did race on "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Saved". Seeing you shedding tears of gratitude at the end of "People Get Ready" broke open my tear ducts. Who of us has not at some time or other been overcome with gratitude for the things we have been given by God.
I think I get what the Englishman is trying to say, he would have you throw away that soft side of you, of which he has none, even though he says "don't lose yourself in this competition". He wants from you what he wants from you and doesn't, in my opinion(I love that, it's what he always says), care what the rest of us think. I do believe he thinks he has your best interest at heart, he wants you to be a commercial product and make money, which I want for you also. I do not know you except what I see on TV, but I honestly believe what you said, when you spoke of making a better life for your son, that's why you're on the show. I for one am glad you made that decision and shared your God give talent with the rest of us.
Here's for the Brit....Simon you either love her or you don't, you can't have it both ways!!!!!
I for one love everything about you and will be very sad when AI is over, for I will not get to see you every week on TV. Will just have to wait for the first album Have already purchased all your songs from Itunes. Hope you make it to the music capitol of the world as Austinites are fond of saying, Austin, Tx. so I can see you live.

  2. Just figured out why I love the songs "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "Summerwind". When I was a young man I was madly in love with the singing of Miss Peggy Lee(politically correct cops don't get upset with the "Miss", you need to get a life). Crystal's rendition of those 2 songs just took me back to a gentler time and place. Thank you Crystal.
Personally I think Crystal pulled them off very well, copying one of the talking heads on the panels remarks, they were sultry, sexy and to me very soothing. Life has gotten to fast, sit back, turn on the soothing sounds of Crystal's melodious voice and relax.
She will probably never make an album with those types of songs, but if she did I would buy it. Crystal is Crystal and as I think I said in another post, I would buy an album of her singing names out of a phone book.
On another subject, it's really to bad that some folks life experiences, lead them to mistake SELF-ASSURANCE for defensiveness. I for one would not be able to stand there and listen to some talking heads criticizing me for doing something that mean't a lot to me. After all it was only THEIR opinion and this is my opinion. If we all agreed on everything life would no doubt be boring.
I see how many times I have posted on here and I think I need to get a life, but then when you love something or someone you should express your love the best way you can and not let it go to your grave with you. Mine at this moment is through this medium.
Now time to go for a motorcycle ride, beautiful day and weather.

  3. What do I think? Really? Does anybody care? I think TPTB paired up these duets in this way: (1) Winners; and (2) Losers! And TPTB are still (as usual) trying to shove this duo down our throats. Why didn't they mix it up? Because they want us (the dumbt public) to see Lee & Crystal as a "UNIT" (the Top 2)! And they're doing everything in their power to KEEP it so! THANK YOU TO TPTB!
